Alcala de Hernares - 14-Sept-2011

actually the plan was to go to Toledo
could sleep well because of a group of Polish girls who think they are the only persons in the world
so arrived late at the train station, I saw again that it is not possible to buy a ticket from the vendor machines with Visa Electron card; also the train to Toledo is AVENTI - it requires a registration for the way to Toledo and back; couldn't risk to pay the ticket and then to miss the train; so I went back to Cercanias and bought a ticket to Alcala de Heranes instead
I had read that this city is a small Salamanca; it was a nice surprise though, especially after the previous day in Aarnjuez where there is nothing to do (beside the castle of course). In contrary, Alcala de Heranes is a very pleasant small city full of life (not exactly true at siesta time when almost everything is closed); very good tourist information - map + working times of all sites; guided tours; almost everything is possible to be visited for free; had a breakfast for the first time on this stay in Spain - cafe + tostada; had a guided tour at the university (55 min in Spanish) and another one in the Palace of Laredo (I was the only tourist at Laredo Palace) - combined ticket 5.50e; climbed the tower of the cathedral for 2.50e - again the only tourist; visited the birth house of Cervantes for free; visited the archeological museum for fee - this is the best archeological museum I've been to; actually it doesn't have much to do with archeology - it is a mixture of archaeological museum + museum of human history + history of Spain; but it is very interactive, lots of multimedia materials; Archbishop's Palace is not open to public but it is where Christopher Column was introduced to the Queen for the first time from what I read; a lot of colleges, churches, beautiful buildings; almost everything is in red and the sky was very spectacular
an amazing tour!
